September 27, 2013 marks the 27th year of the untimely death of original Metallica bassist Cliff Burton. Gone, but definitely not forgotten, Burton is still revered by Metallica fans and metal fans in general. His long, flopping mess of hair frantically thrashing all over, made me realize that one way or another I was meant to thrash like a maniac when I was a young child, and more so as I got older! After 27 years it is nice to see that Cliff still holds a special place in thrashers hearts. Metallica was one of the biggest underground bands at the time of his death, and building momentum. I remember the chills I got the first time I heard (Anesthesia) Pulling Teeth, and the chill I got when I first heard of his passing. Cliff was the dude that was into bands that it wasn't cool to be into and could care less what people thought.
Much has happened in the career of Metallica since Burton's death. The band has gone through two bass players in Jason Newsted, and Robert Trujillo. Have become one of the biggest bands in the history of hard rock, put out two movies, fought against internet downloading, and managed to come back from the depths of internal combustion that almost buried the band. Like it or hate it, one always has to wonder what if...... What if Cliff was alive? Would he have allowed for such a drastic departure from their roots? How would he have handled a therapist dissecting the bands every felling, emotion, and movement? Would he have mellowed in his musical direction as he grew older? With so many questions and no way to have a clear decisive answer, I always like to think to myself that Cliff would have found a way to keep the machine running the right way! I like to think he would have had a long conversation with James Hetfield about his more "melodic"approach to singing, or tells Lars about Napster and selling paintings , "Let it go my little Danish buddy". Cliff was always going against the grain musically and I think that would have continued. May you continue to rest in peace Cliff, we miss you, and you still live and rock out in our hearts!
