Clicking to click: the pros and cons of online dating

The popularity of social networking sites on the internet in recent years seems bigger than the boom of America Online back in 1995. Facebook, Myspace, and a list of other sites have created another avenue for people to meet, communicate, and find relationships. Below are some of the benefits and drawbacks to help you navigate the frontier of online dating.

PROS
I.Prescreening Possibilities…This is a great plus of online dating if you like certain qualities in women. Profile searches allow you to seek out common interests in categories like music, sports, and fashion. It also allows you to weed out the women you’d wish not to date.

II.Get to know someone from the comfort of your own home…Nerves and jitters are reduced greatly if you’re sitting behind your computer monitor instead of in front of the woman you’re interested in for your first conversation. She won’t notice your deer in the headlights look as you fumble for the right words, and you can build in the prospect of a first in-person meeting as a future commitment.

III.Less stress and more control… The beauty of chatting via myspace or facebook is that unlike in verbal communication, you have a “rewind” function in the ability to edit and retract messages if necessary before you send them. This feature can save you potential humiliation and your chances of continued communication with her.

CONS

I.Greater chance of long distance relationship…Even if she’s a former classmate from high school, more times than not distances are greater between people with online meetings than finding someone through a mutual friend or your workplace. To cut back on the long distance relationship trap, try filtering your search results to within a certain distance of your hometown.

II.Difficult to detect red flags…. You wouldn’t advertise the skeletons from your past on your profile, so why assume anyone else would? The curtain of anonymity can hide more about a person’s history than if you were to meet them through someone you mutually knew. For all you know, thirty year old single Michelle could be sixty year old married Michael.

The best advice to avoid an unpleasant online dating experience would be to focus more on mutual friends and people you knew from high school, college, or former employers. Here are some websites to get you started.
