Light heavyweight, Sergey Kovalev (22-0-1, 20 KOs) of Russia defeated Nathan Cleverly (26-1, 12 KOs), of the United Kingdom, today at the Motorpoint Arena in Wales, United Kingdom. The win, gives the pre-owned WBO light heavyweight title owned by Nathan Cleverly to it's new owner, Sergey Kovalev.
The championship bout can be seen in it's entirety tonight on a tape delay, on HBO Boxing After Dark at 9:45 p.m. ET/PT.
This fight had excitement written all over it, Kovalev came out strong, but suffered a cut in round 2 of the scheduled 12-round fight.
With a sense of urgency, Kovalev delivered some powerful blows in round-3, dropping Cleverly twice for the first time in his career. Cleverly would survive, but was clearly out of his element.
In round-4, Kovalev was just to powerful for the hometown favorite Cleverly, the referee would call a halt to the action, stopping the fight early in the round. It was a good call by the referee, preventing Cleverly from getting seriously injured.
