The ingenious Seattle Police Department has added a new flavor to the nation’s largest annual Hempfest. The weekend event will be the first celebration for the cannabis culture since Initiative 502 was ratified in November 2012. Washington State voters supported the legalization of recreational marijuana use. The approval of the landmark ballot makes the Pacific Northwest state one of only two in the nation to legalize marijuana use, the other state is Colorado.
Seattle’s Hempfest 2013 is expected to attract more than 200,000 pot-party enthusiasts. The Seattle Police Department is gearing up with a new twist. Keeping in mind that with any new law, there is an element of confusion, the police tactics for crowd control include “Operation Orange Fingers”.
Sgt. Sean Whitcomb, Seattle Police Department spokesman, shared that during this historical period they want to make sure that the people learn the rules and respect the vote. Officers will be handing out 1,000 bags of Doritos labeled with summaries of the new guidelines. The Guide to Legal Marijuana Use in Seattle is at “Marijwhatnow?”. This is a clever way to educate the public as they satisfy their munchies. Keep in mind Washington State laws have changed, but federal laws regarding marijuana remain the same. Event participants should know the rules.
