Cleveland revamps labeling of "dangerous" dogs

Cleveland, OH - Pit bulls have a friend in Cleveland's City Council - his name is Matt Zone. Zone, who rescued a Pit bull puppy three years ago, introduced the legislation which is responsible for the change.

Now, rather than automatically slapping a "dangerous" label on a dog just because of its breed, the labeling will stem from a dog's behavior instead.

Zone didn't feel that it was fair to label one breed, as a whole, as "bad".

Zone encountered breed specific legislation with his own puppy, who had been run over by a vehicle near his office. At the time, he was told that the pup would be killed because it was a "Pit bull".

Zone had to plead for the puppy's life in order to save him.

Thankfully, his pleas were heard and the pup was saved - his dog, named Gordan, is now a gentle, sweet-natured member of Zone's family.

As for the "disorderly" dogs of Cleveland - they will still face specific regulations if they have shown a behavioral problem.

Dogs who have tried to harm a person or domestic animal will be classified as a "level 1" threat and those who actually do harm a person or domestic animal will be labeled as a "level 2".

Note - this can be any breed of dog - not just a Pit Bull.

A dog's behavior, not a dog's breed, will be the indicator for what restrictions are imposed on the dog (and the dog's owner).

The Ohio Genereal Assembly is currently debating whether or not to end the law the automatically labels "Pit bull" types of dogs as inherently vicious.
