Written and performed by Christine Howey (formerly Dick Howey)

Play will run from January 9 through 25, 2014

Cleveland Public Theatre (CPT) will be presenting the world premiere of Christine Howey’s (noted Cleveland actor, poet, journalist and critic) new play “Exact Change”. This powerful new play is about finding your own voice while championing your identity.

“Exact Change” came about during CPT’s “New Work Development Series” that included “The Dark Room and “Big Box 2013”. The work was written by Howey as well as performed with Scott Plate directing.

“The writing is funny, fierce, bawdy, and smart. Howey commands the stage, hurling lightning strikes of emotion and insight.” –Dee Perry, Senior Host/Producer, 90.3 WCPN/Ideastream/NE Ohio Public Radio

When Dick Howey was an actor (prior to transitioning in 1990) he portrayed such male characters as Lucifer, Goebbels, Terrible Jim Fitch, Richard Nixon, God and others. “Exact Change” explores his gender transition through political rants, personal reflections and wit. The work uses spoken word, poetry, monologue and dialog that bring Christine’s personality to light.

“I feel a strong need to communicate the challenging issues and deep satisfaction that comes from finding one’s true gender. I know the idea of a gender change is a very foreign one for most people…so I wanted to make the feelings and aspirations of a transgender person accessible and as understandable as possible.” –Christine Howey
