Pierre Boulez leads The Cleveland Orchestra in concerts featuring works by Stravinsky on February 16, 17, and 18 at Severance Hall

Pierre Boulezconducts The Cleveland Orchestrain Severance Hall concerts featuring Stravinsky’s Symphonies of Wind Instruments (original edition, 1920) and Symphony of Psalms (1948 revision), the latter with the Cleveland Orchestra Chorus. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimardis soloist in Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 1. The program also includes Schoenberg’s Chamber Symphony No. 1, Opus 9; these will be the first performances of a new edition of the full orchestra version of 1914.
These concerts conclude a two-week engagement with the Orchestra for Pierre Boulez. The program for his first week of concerts (February 9, 11, and 12) includes Mahler’s Symphony No. 7 and three choral-orchestral works by Schubert. Pierre Boulez has conducted The Cleveland Orchestra in more than 200 concerts since making his debut with the ensemble in 1965. Former Music Director George Szell appointed Mr. Boulez to the post of principal guest conductor beginning in 1969. Following Szell’s death in 1970, Mr. Boulez served also as musical advisor of the Orchestra, from 1970 to 1972. Mr. Boulez’s recordings with the Orchestra have won five Grammy Awards. His most recent recordings with the Orchestra are of the Ravel piano concertos with Pierre-Laurent Aimard as soloist, and a DVD recording of Mahler’s Des Knaben Wunderhorn with mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kožená and baritone Christian Gerhaher, plus the Adagio from Mahler’s Symphony No. 10. Pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimardmade his Cleveland Orchestra debut in 1996 and has performed with the Orchestra in a dozen different works in more than 35 concerts, including tour performances. Mr. Aimard served as Artist-in-Residence with The Cleveland Orchestra for the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons. The position is supported by the Malcolm E. Kenney Artist-in-Residence Endowment Fund. In February 2010, Mr. Aimard recorded Ravel’s piano concertos with the Orchestra under the direction of Pierre Boulez, for Deutsche Grammophon. His most recent performances with the Orchestra were in a three-week series of concerts conducted by Franz Welser-Möst in January and February 2011 at Severance Hall, during the Orchestra’s residency in Miami, and on tour, including a concert at Carnegie Hall.

Beginning one hour prior to the February 16, 17, and 18 concerts, a Concert Preview titled “Symphonies of Sounds” will be given in Reinberger Chamber Hall by Michael Strasser, professor of musicology at the Baldwin-Wallace College Conservatory of Music.
