Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to add new event center at Waterfowl Lake

Over the course of the season, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo provides rental facilities for a number of events such as parties, weddings, corporate events and showers. As the demand has grown, the need for a new facility has become evident. The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo has announced a new rentable event center that will overlook the picturesque Waterfowl Lake. The facility is planned to be finished by spring of 2015.

Plans call for the 10,000-square-foot event center to be located in the Savanna Ridge area and will be nearby to the new Circle of Wildlife Carousel and Nature Discovery Ridge play zone and are scheduled for opening in late May of this year.

"The Zoo is such a unique place to have an event," said Cleveland Metroparks CEO Brian Zimmerman. "And the demand for rental space throughout the Zoo has been increasing, while our ability to host events has been limited due to all of the indoor, year-round rentable spaces being inside animal exhibit buildings. We are committed to providing the best possible visitor experience; therefore this event center allows us to serve our guests while still accommodating the organizations and individuals looking to host their weddings, special events, corporate outings, trade shows and other events."

The center will feature a 2,100-square-foot patio that will overlook Waterfowl Lake while increasing the Zoo’s ability to provide a prime event hosting site. Peninsula Architects is the criteria architects not only for this new center but also the carousel project as well. This was done to maintain design consistency between the two new projects.

With the cost of the project estimated at $2.3 million, the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo contracted caterer, ARAMARK, committed to $1 million towards the construction costs. The Cleveland Zoological Society has committed $300,000 and the final $1 million will be funded by Cleveland Metroparks.

"ARAMARK is very excited to extend our longtime partnership with Cleveland Metroparks, including the construction of the new event center," said ARAMARK District Manager Sam Cario. "This new space will allow us to produce and create a wider variety of events in an environment that is unmatched in Northeast Ohio."
