As you look out across the frozen tundra that is Cleveland with its mountains of piled snow it is hard to visualize that soon Spring will come to wash away the winter gloom followed by Summer. Truth is, Spring IS just around the corner and it is high time to sign up for the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Summer Camp Program.

Registration for the general public will start on March 15, 2014 with the sessions running from June 9 through August 15, 2014. Each week long session will focus on a new theme and are available in half-day (9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.) and full-day (9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.) blocks.

The Cleveland Metroparks Zoo Summer Day Camp is designed for children age 5 through 14. New this year is a special half-day Nature Play Camp for children aged 3 through 4. Campers are grouped according to age in order to provide a learning environment that is safe and wholesome.

The purpose of the camp is to create unique experiences between the children and the wildlife while teaching conservation and stewardship of the earth. Campers are instructed by experienced camp counselors who teach about wildlife and the environment.

For those campers in the 11-12 age group there is the chance to learn about wildlife biology while touring the Zoo and the Brookside Reservation and for young teens in the 13 through 14 age group they can take part in the “Counselor In Training” camp where they develop leadership skills while working with the Zoo’s Day Camp Staff, Zoo Crew teens and while participating in team building exercises.

There is still one more option for the 11 through 14 age group and that is the Emerald Necklace Camp which is a day camp “sampler” of the entire Cleveland Metroparks. Here, campers explore not only the Zoo but take field trips to various areas of the Park District. Here they learn to hike, canoe, gold and more.

Space is limited, so register early to avoid being shut out. Registration is available online atclevelandmetroparks.com/zoo.

Northeast Ohio's most-visited year-round attraction, Cleveland Metroparks Zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily. Through March 31, admission is discounted to $8.25 per person, $5.25 for kids ages 2 to 11 and is free for children younger than 2 and Zoo members. Parking is free. Residents of Cuyahoga County and Hinckley Township enjoy free Zoo admission on Mondays. Located at 3900 Wildlife Way, the Zoo is easily accessible from Interstates 71, 90 and 480.
