Cleveland Indians spring notes: Four pitchers battle for final rotation spot

In an Akron Beacon Journal story titled “Four Indians pitchers begin battle for one spot in the rotation” published on Monday, Feb. 25, 2013, Sheldon Ocker explores the battle taking place between pitchers Carlos Carrasco, Scott Kazmir, Trevor Bauer, and Daisuke Matsuzaka (Dice-K) for the fifth and final spot in the Cleveland Indians starting rotation this season.

All four pitchers have something unique to offer, and all four have had their struggles to get to where they are at this point in camp.

As the rotation stands, Justin Masterson, Ubaldo Jimenez, Brett Myers, and Zach McAllister are all but guaranteed the top four spots. The fifth and final spot remains up for grabs.

Carrasco struggled in his one inning on Sunday giving up four runs on four hits and one walk. The other three fared much better. Kazmir allowed just one hit and struck out one in two strong innings. Bauer also performed admirably allowing just two hits and stinking out two in a pair of scoreless innings. Dice-K threw a pair of hitless innings while walking one.

There is still plenty of spring baseball to be had making this battle far from over.
