On Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2013, the Cleveland Indians announced they have claimed infielder/outfielder Russ Canzler off outright waivers and placed him on the 40-man roster. To make room for Canzler, the Indians also announced they have designated pitcher Jeanmar Gomez for assignment.
The Toronto Blue Jays claimed Canzler on Dec. 21 after being designated three days prior when the Indians signed free agent infielder Mark Reynolds.
The decision to option Gomez signifies the Indians’ intent on improving the club’s starting rotation. While Gomez still has youth on his side, he is out of minor league options and has been somewhat inconsistent since his MLB debut on July 18, 2010. It was uncertain he would be able to win a spot in the starting rotation prior to the team’s decision to sign free agent pitcher Brett Myers, let alone any future addition the team will make before the final 25-man and 40-man rosters are set.
Cleveland’s 40-man roster is currently full.
