Cleveland Indians farm news: Tribe invites five to Major League camp

On Thursday, Jan. 24, 2013, the Cleveland Indians announced they have extended non-roster invitations to Major League spring training to infielder Jesus Aguilar, pitcher Preston Guilmet, pitcher Matt Langwell, catcher Roberto Perez, and pitcher Giovanni Soto.

Aguilar enters the 2013 campaign rated as the 10th best prospect in the Indians’ organization according to Baseball America. Last season between Single-A Carolina and Double-A Akron, he hit a combined .280 with 31 doubles, 15 home runs, and 71 RBIs. He signed as a non-drafted free agent in 2007.

Guilmet spent the 2012 season at Double-A Akron where he earned 24 saves, and was named to the Eastern League Postseason All-Star team. He was selected in the ninth round of the 2009 amateur draft.

Langwell spent the 2012 season split between Double-A Akron and Triple-A Columbus where he went 4-0 paired with a 2.74 ERA in 42 relief appearances. He was selected in the 11th round of the 2008 amateur draft.

Perez spent the 2012 season at Double-A Akron where he batted .212 with 16 doubles, one home run, and 31 RBIs in 95 games. He was selected in the 33rd round of the 2008 amateur draft.

Soto spent the 2012 season at Double-A Akron where he posted a 6-9 record paired with a 3.93 ERA in 22 starts. He will pitch for Puerto Rico in the 2013 World Baseball Classic. The Indians acquired Soto in 2010 in a trade with the Detroit Tigers in exchange for infielder Jhonny Peralta.
