In addition to Irving’s 40-point performance, Tristan Thompson stepped up with 21 points and nine rebounds. Of the bench, Luke Walton shot a perfect 3-3 from the field for seven points to pair with his seven assists and three rebounds.
Rajon Rondo led the Celtics in their losing effort with 17 points, 13 rebounds, and eight assists on the night. Kevin Garnett added 16 points while Paul Pierce contributed 12. Rookie Jared Sullinger led the bench with 12 points and 10 rebounds in just over 26 minutes on the court.
Celtics’ coach Doc Rivers had nothing but high praise for Irving during the post-game press conference when he stated:
''He has all the numbers to be an All-Star, for sure,'' Rivers said. ''Whether he makes it or not is another story. ... He's a tough kid, which I don't think people give him enough credit for.''
If one thing is certain for the Cavaliers despite their struggles this season, Irving certainly does his best to keep games exciting for fans to enjoy.
