Cleveland Browns needs heading into 2010

There is a universal rule in football, new regimes equal new starting QB’s. For Derek Anderson and Brady Quinn this seems to mean that their time in the brown and orange is at an end.

However with a work stoppage looming, very restrictive rules about free agents coming into place for the 2010 season, and a very weak QB draft class, it looks like the Browns are going to have to stick with one of these men in 2010.

Who they decide to stick with could very well affect what they do in the draft or free agency. Anderson has shown some flashes of talent with the right pieces around him. If the Browns decide to stay with Anderson, than their top need becomes a number one wide receiver. Given the trade demands of Joshua Cribbs that could be their biggest need anyway.

While they spent the 2009 draft stockpiling a lot of nice prospects at receiver and tight end, the Browns still lack a go to guy. The kind of guy who could help improve their third down offense, and could make either one of their mediocre QB’s look a whole lot better.

The Browns could also use help at Right Tackle. By far John St. Clair is the weak link on their offensive line, and it could be time for the Browns to seek an upgrade.

The defensive side of the ball could also use a few additions. They could use a 3-4 DE to help improve their terrible run defense, of course in 2009 they were the worst defense in terms of yards allowed per game so a playmaker in the secondary could also be a primary need.

In the end, a team looking to rebuild could use a talented prospect at every position. They have the best argument for taking the best player available when they draft. In fact they should strive to find a few playmakers via free agency (however limited it may be this off-season) and their draft picks, and then look to build a team around them.

Not an easy task to undertake, but one that Mike Holmgren and his new front office are certainly capable of doing.
