Cleveland Browns hire Rob Chudzinski as head coach; pass on Bengals' Zimmer

The updates regarding the Cleveland Browns head coach position have been coming in as fast and furiously and Vin Diesel drives. However it seems the race is over and we have a winner. The Cleveland Browns have confirmed they have hired Rob Chudzinski as their new head coach.

The news of Rob Chudzinski’s hiring comes as a surprise to most everyone who has been watching the carousel of candidates interviewing with the Browns.

Initially University of Oregon’s Chip Kelly was the most oft mentioned contender, but when Kelly elected to stay at Oregon others were brought it. Most heavily discussed were former Arizona Cardinals’ coach Ken Whisenhunt and Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Zimmer’s agent had reported on Thursday that Zimmer was invited for a second interview with the Cleveland Browns today. Clearly that second interview is no longer necessary.

Rob Chudzinksi grew up in Ohio rooting for the Cleveland Browns, so this is no doubt an exciting opportunity for him. Chudzinski worked as an assistant coach for the Browns previously and has most recently spent time working with Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton.

This is also a positive development for fans of the Cincinnati Bengals who are well aware of the treasure they have in defensive coordinator Mike Zimmer. Though Zimmer has expressed frustration in not receiving a head coach position, Bengals fans are happy he is staying put, for now.
