The former First Stop Executive Director, Tashaunda Weeks, as well as several case managers, and some staff were let go following an internal audit of services and finances. The audit was implemented after the Board expressed First Stop, Inc.’s Board of Directors expressed doubt that the organization was headed in “the right direction.”

The Board’s decision to have Wetli replace Weeks was unanimous.

Wetli has stated, “I think the organization had shifted focus over a number of years, where the focus became more on securing housing than making sure the people had case management and community resources they needed. What we want to do is just make sure the organization gets back to its root focus to do community outreach, identify homeless people, and make sure their needs are met.”

According to, “The State of Homelessness in America in America 2013,” a research report published by the Homelessness Research Institute (a branch of the National Alliance to End Homelessness) stated that there were 5,209 people who were homeless in the state of Alabama. Homelessness is a problem that affects many people in the Huntsville-Madison County area.
