On March 9 at 9a.m., the non-profit group Friends of Withlacoochee Gulf Preserve (FWGP) is sponsoring the Bird Creek Area Cleanup. The community and visitors are invited to participate and give back to the organization that supports the preserve, conservation and educational programs nationwide.
The charitable organization is the Felburn Foundation that funded conservancy property bordering Bird Creek Bridge in Yankeetown. Just last year the foundation awarded a major grant to the Florida Conservation Coalition.
The FWGP says the meeting place is at Bird Creek Park on the west end of Hwy 40, just north of the boat ramp and then volunteers may carpool to the site. This will reduce the number of cars on the narrow roadway at the end of the road. The FWGP confirms they will supply the trash bags for a couple of hours of small debris collection. They suggest bringing:
- sturdy shoes
- work clothes
- work gloves
- bug spray
- water to drink
The FWGP also confirms their appreciation of all help in maintaining the natural beauty of the area and any volunteers who return to the preserve to clean out ground floor closets, after the Bird Creek project.
At 6:30p.m., in Crystal River, Wine Shop 3 is holding another wine tasting. This is an excellent opportunity for existing or potential connoisseurs to experience 8 to 10 different wines for $10 per person, with nibbles on hand.
The wine shop and bar proprietors, Colleen and Garry Brady, are currently in Napa Valley, Cal., identifying new wine varieties for Floridian wine enthusiasts. They report, “We are out here searching for new tastes and treasures for everyone to enjoy. Not a bad job and someone has to do it.”
