United by Blue (UBB) is teaming up with Blue Water Baltimore to host their first beach cleanup in Baltimore. The cleanup will be held at Alrick's Way on Saturday, June 11 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Alrick's Way is near Armistead Run and Herring Run, both of which are popular sites for illegal dumping. Volunteers will be meeting at 1200 Armistead Road. UBB will provide the gloves, water, and food, so volunteers just have to bring themselves-- and a willingness to help clean up the Chesapeake Bay. The Alrick's Way cleanup will be the largest one so far organized by UBB and they hope to collect at least several thousand pounds of trash-- and thereby prevent it from flowing into the Bay.
United By Blue is a Philadelphia-based company founded in 2010 that sells sustainable clothing and accessories. The founder, Brian Linton, has long had an interest in ocean conservation. Early on, he made it a policy that UBB would clean up one pound of trash for every item they sell. To that end, UBB organizes beach cleanups across the country. So far they have organized over 30 such cleanups and removed almost 18,000 pounds of trash.
Blue Water Baltimore is a non-profit environmental organization that was created in February 2011 by the merger of five smaller watershed organizations. They aid in cleanup and restoration around the Chesapeake Bay. They also work with a number or partners and community members to educate people about water restoration.
