Dietary choices have a major influence on the amount of results you will see from your fitness program. Even if your fitness program is well rounded and contains the three major components (strength, cardio, and stretching), you will have to work much harder to see results if your diet is poor. Change your diet and make healthier choices to see better results. Be sure to avoid these three common dieting mistakes:
Deprivation - Restricting the diet to a small amount of calories will initially cause you to lose weight, however, it is not a maintainable or healthy way to eat. Taking in too few calories will force your body to burn muscle, which will in turn lower your metabolism. Instead of deprivation use portion control.
Eliminating certain food groups - Your body needs a balance of carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. Eliminating any one of these food groups completely will cause your body to be imbalanced. Rather than eliminating whole groups of food, try making healthier choices within those groups. Choose whole grain carbohydrates, lean proteins, and mono or poly unsaturated fats.
Eating 'healthy' foods instead of REAL foods - When choosing what to eat avoid reading the flashy messages on the front of packages, and read the nutritional content instead. Just because a product is labeled as 'fat free' or 'low carb' doesn't mean it is providing any nutrients for your body. An easy way to choose healthy foods is to choose real foods. For example, fruits, vegetables, beans, seeds, raw nuts, or any other food that is as close to its natural state as possible.
