This week the Bakersfield Jazz Workshop will be giving a FREE jazz clinic and performance featuring Clayton Cameron, a fantastic jazz drummer known worldwide as the "Brush Master" since the release of his drumming video in 1990, "The Living Art of Brushes."
As an added attraction, the BJW will be announcing this year's scholarship/grant winners. The 501-c non-profit organization awards scholarships and grants to promising jazz students for jazz camps, college jazz programs, and other related jazz programs.
Clayton previously visited the BJW as part of Kenny Burrell's band during his benefit concert for the BJW about 2 years ago. He is, simply put, a master of his art, known throughout the world for his drumming skill and his teaching expertise.
He spent several years touring and recording with Tony Bennett, appearing on 6 of his Grammy Award nominated albums, 5 of which won the award! He has performed with a who's who of the jazz and music industry, including Sammy Davis Jr., Frank Sinatra, George Shearing, Joe Pass, Joe Williams, Sting, and non-jazz artists such as Mariah Carey, Elvis Costello, and James Taylor. He has performed before presidents, royalty, alternative rock crowds, charities, and many more.
Clayton will be giving a jazz clinic for the first hour, followed by two separate sets of music in which he will be accompanied by local jazz musicians, including Ezekiel Victor (piano), Mike Raney (sax), Ron Christian (trombone), Steve Eisen (trumpet), and Glen Fong (bass).
The clinic and perfomance will be presented free of charge to the public!
Mr. Cameron's appearance is part of the BJW's Clinician Series 2010, a series of free clinics and performances featuring world class jazz artists accompanied by local jazz musicians. The first clinic was held in April of this year and featured Dave Tull, drummer/vocalist for Chuck Mangione. The second clinic, held in June, was given by Carl Saunders, perhaps the greatest jazz trumpeter in the world today. Future clinics include Henry Franklin (bass), Theo Saunders (piano), and Barbara Morrison (vocalist).
The series is simply an unprecedented opportunity for local music students, professional musicians, and the listening public to learn from and enjoy the music of the jazz masters - all at no charge!
