Parents and grandparents love gifts that are handmade. Students in fourth grade and older can make this wind chime, and practice using simple hand tools and tying knots at the same time. To make one you will need:
- Small clay flower pot
- Wood drawer knob
- Eye screw that fits into the knob
- 2 long finishing nails
- Red and black craft paint
- Wood heart
- Macramé cord, twine or rope
- Large wooden bead
- Small eye screw
Paint the drawer knob to look like a lady bug. Use the long finishing nails for antenna. It’s easier to drive the nails if you drill a small pilot hole in the knob first. Drill a pilot hole in the center of the knob, and screw in a small eye screw to hang the chime with.
Drill a hole in the point of the wooden heart shape. Paint it to look like a lady bug on both sides. Paint one side, let it dry, and then paint the other side.
The wooden drawer knob will have a screw that fits into the flat side of the knob. If possible, replace this screw with an eye screw. An eye screw will let the chime swing more freely. But, if this isn’t possible because the knob has an insert for the screw threads, then just tie the cord around the head of the screw.
The wood bead swings back and forth inside the pot like a clapper in a bell. Measure the length of the pot (they come in different sizes) and tie an overhand knot that will hold the bead near the rim of the pot. The beads in the picture had a large hole, so I used a thick cord. If the cord isn’t thick enough to make a knot big enough to cover the hole, another option is to add a smaller wood bead under the large one.
Tie the wood heart shape to the cord about a foot lower than the knot. In the picture, the ends of the macramé cord were frayed. I thought the frayed ends would help catch the wind, but it didn’t work. Depending on what type of cord you are using, you may want to skip that step, and just tie the cords neatly.
After assembling the clapper, push the screw through the hole in the clay pot, from the inside to the outside. Screw on the drawer knob. Add a loop of cord to the eye screw on the top to make a hanger.
