Classical guitarist David Russell to return to San Francisco Performances

The San Francisco Performances (SFP) Guitar Series, presented in association with the Dynamite Guitars series of the Omni Foundation for the Performing Arts, will continue in 2014 with the return of classical guitarist David Russell. Scottish-born Russell has been a “regular” in this concert series, having made his last visit to San Francisco a little less than a year ago, when he supplemented his recital by participating in the Concerts with Conversation series at the Community Music Center. As I observed last year, his “technical mastery of his instrument has been matched by his talent for transcription;” and the program for his coming concert will feature music composed for both violin and piano, as well as an original work for guitar.

The solo violin composition will be Johann Sebastian Bach’s BWV 1002 partita in B minor, one of Bach’s most extended studies in inventive embellishment. This will be followed by an arrangement of the eight waltzes that Enrique Granados composed for piano under the title Valses poéticos, along with three piano compositions by Isaac Albéniz: "Capricho Catalán," "Granada," and "Asturías." For all of these pieces Russell will be performing his own transcriptions. From the repertoire for solo guitar, Russell will begin his recital with a recital by Fernando Sor. He will also perform "Jubilosa Plenitud," which Juan Sorroche composed and dedicated to Russell.

This recital will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church (1111 O’Farrell Street, just west of the corner of Franklin Street) on Saturday, March 15. Ticket prices are $50 and $30. Tickets may be purchased through the event page on the SFP Web site. Tickets may also be purchased by calling 415-398-6449.
