Classic Sakuri won the $10,000 Fillies and Mares Open Pace on Feb. 1 at Northfield Park in 1:56.2 for driver Josh Sutton, under less than ideal conditions.
Northfield’s surface had turned to slush atop melting snow but the 8-year-old daughter of Astreos had little trouble scoring her 25th career victory, pushing her lifetime earnings to $125,910 for owners Lora Markley of Marshallville, Ohio and Kiesha Malloy of Macedonia, Ohio.
Barry Langley conditions the mare, who scored the win by 2½ lengths over the track, which was listed as “sloppy.”
Classic Sakuri is the third foal out of the Camluck mare Spider Cam p, 2, 1:55.3s ($42,390) and is a half-sister to Classic V p, 3, 1:57.1f ($11,228) and to Classic Web p,3,2:00.3h ($16,004)—both by Mach Three.
Driver Josh Sutton won five races on the Northfield Park and currently sits atop the half-mile oval’s driver standings. Sutton, 31, began driving professionally in 2000 and has nearly $13 million in purse earnings to his credit with more than 2,225 career victories.
