Roanoke's own Norfolk & Western Railroad was known primarily as a coal hauler. The N&W focused on hauling "King Coal" from the mountains of Virginia and West Virginia to the Tidewater in Norfolk and also west to the steel mills and Great Lakes.
When Tony Koester designed his well-known HO scale Allegheny Midland he designed a model railroad which while fictional, shared many traits with the N&W. Readers learned about its progress and changes during Tony's stint as editor of Railroad Model Craftsman (RMC) and also in his "Trains of Thought" column at Model Railroader.
Now the AM is only a memory but this fascinating new book, The Allegheny Midland: Lessons Learned; brings it back to life for readers and modelers in any scale. Learn how Koester pictured his railroad as part of the real railroad world and how he developed a locomotive roster to support that vison.
Koester discusses lessons learned during the construction and operation of the Allegheny Midland. Then, using the author's original photography, Koester highlights many how-to lessons from its construction, along with the wisdom and perspective that comes from reviewing what worked and what didn't on one of the largest and most notable layouts in the country.
