Classic cars and French pastries in the heart of Escondido

Feb 28, 2011 -  Serendipity is great.  Traveling back to Los Angeles from San Diego this past weekend and simply in search of breakfast, our car left the freeway towards downtown Escondido.

It didn’t take long before it was obvious that much more than breakfast would be found in town, as classic cruisers lined the streets in every direction.  At one end of downtown a band played on a temporary stage and a few booths sold t-shirts and other small items. Car owners sat on folding chairs close by their loved possessions while many others walked up and down the streets admiring machines beautifully kept even though aged almost a century.

The occasion turned out to be a fundraiser to help the new Classic Car Cruise get into a good start under the management of Steve Walton.  The Cruisin’ Grand began in 2000 supported by the Escondido’s Downtown Business Association.  This year, however, the association terminated its relationship with the event due to cost constrictions and different future planning.

Steve Walton, a Cruising’ Grand co-founder, stepped up to the plate to establish the new Classic Car Cruise, an event that will be much like the Cruisin’ Grand, and which, from this year on, will continue to bring hundreds of classic cruisers to the streets of Escondido every Friday from 5 pm to 9 pm between the months of April and September.

More power to Steve Walton and to all the car owners supporting this effort.  Those of you interested in classic car shows can learn more about the new Escondido Classic Car Cruise by visiting their Facebook page.  For your enjoyment, I’m attaching a few pictures of the gorgeous cars present at the fundraiser.

For the record… breakfast?  Do visit A Delight of France, (a delicious French bakery!)  the next time you find yourself in the heart of Escondido.

Great article! Thank you for the kind words. I have been attending this cruise since it first started, and it has become a tradition for our family to attend each week!
