Classic cars and antiquing in St. Louis

The Saint Louis Auto Show offers a chance to view hundreds of new vehicles this weekend. After viewing the latest trends, auto enthusiasts may take a step back in time at two area showrooms. The Kemp Auto Museum and Gateway Classic Cars offer opportunities to see the evolution of automobiles dating back to 1886.

View the Kemp Auto Museum collection of more than 30 cars in Chesterfield. The tour begins with an 1886 Patent Motorwagon and a pictorial canvas display of the evolution of automobiles. The main showroom always displays a Mercedes Benz collection. Visitors may check back throughout the year to see special exhibits that feature other car brands to gain a broader historical view of the industry.

At the museum, ropes keep the visitors a safe distance away to prevent damage to the vehicles. Display stands provide information about each car so that visitors may understand the historical significance of the technology, style or social stature associated with the car.

Unfortunately, the Kemp Auto Museum is closed until February 7 due to a special event. Normally the museum hours are Wednesday through Sunday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost of the museum is $8 for adults.

Enthusiasts who want to purchase a classic or vintage car in addition to viewing them should visit the Gateway Classic Cars and Antique Mall in Fairmont City, Ill. While visitors are not allowed to touch the cars, they may view all four sides of most vehicles. Each car displays information about the car and the cost to purchase it.

This location also includes an antique mall where shoppers may purchase signs associated with the auto industry, model cars and other antique and collectible items. Even though the lighting is dim in this location, most booths offer reasonable prices and interesting collections. This antique shop is a must-stop shop for any collector of antique and vintage car collectible items.

Gateway Classic Cars and Antique Mall is open Monday through Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and Saturday 9 a.m.-5 p.m. The cost of this showroom is $2, but visitors who want to shop only at the antique mall may enter for free.

From 1886 to 2012, the auto industry continually evolves in style technology and manufacturing processes. St. Louis showrooms offer locals and tourists an opportunity to view the historical significance of this industry.

Holly Fox learned the art of antiquing at an early age by accompanying her parents to antique malls. As an adult she decorated her own home with carefully selected antiques. Today, she continues to help her friends and colleagues to find unique gifts or home decor at local antique stores.
