Classic baseball franchise RBI Baseball revitalized

2K recently announced that much like its prior NHL franchise, its MLB franchise is done. With the third party exclusive rights wrapped up under 2K, this has meant no officially licensed Major League Baseball titles since the days of EA's MVP Baseball. Sony has had its exclusive MLB The Show titles, which have been the epitome of sports games since the current generation started. With the cancellation of 2K's series, this has made baseball become a system-specific affair. Today, some hope has risen for fans without a Sony console.

The classic franchise RBI Baseball is making its return to the ballfield in Spring 2014 for all major consoles, current and next generation, along with mobile devices. What does this mean? It could easily be far from a baseball simulation and could be a downloadable title. No specific information has been released about the title under MLBAM other than the the announcement and a website (which can be viewed here).

2K Sports really seems to have a lack of enthusiasm to improve its titles. Ever since the bidding war for exclusive licensed rights started in 2005, most of the sports titles have lacked creative direction. It's not hard to argue that other titles take a backseat when you have a golden egg in the NBA 2K series. 2K initially tried with All-Pro Football 2K8, which was a good title even without licensed teams, but no other releases or official support came after the initial release. The next series to go was the NHL 2K series, as it failed in comparison to EA's hockey series. The difference with these other titles is that there was at least some option for everyone on either Microsoft or Sony platform to play a licensed sports game. Hopefully, RBI Baseball 2014 will offer a deep experience for those without a PlayStation system. Stay tuned for more information.
