Class AA girls basketball section preview

Two girls basketball classes examined and two more to go. Now here's a look at the eight Class AA sections.

In Section 1, Chatfield and Caledonia are the top remaining seeds in the East subsection while Dover-Eyota occupy the top two West subsection seeds.

It's letter perfect for NRHEG (New Richland-Harland-Ellendale-Geneva) since it spells top seed in Section 2. The Panthers led by junior sensation Carlie Wagner need to get by the Southland Rebels and the St. Peter Saints,

Still alive and scoring in Section 3 are the two top seeds the BOLD warriors and the Worthington Trojans. The Martin County West Mavericks could also be a factor.

The top two seeds in Section 4 come from Minneapolis, the Washburn Millers and the Minnehaha Academy Redhawks. Be on the lookout for the third seeded St. Paul Humboldt Hawks. They have one of the Twin Cities top scorers, averaging 26 points per game, Lashay Holt.

Going to Section 5, the top seeds are the Annandale Cardinals and the defending Class AA champion Providence Academy Lions. Ray Finley has done an outstanding job leading the Plymouth based school that's been atop the rankings most of the season. They could be back in Minneapolis for a shot at two straight state titles.

Section 6 has the makings of an outstanding section. In the North bracket there's the top seeded Staples-Motley Cardinals and the second seeded and defending section champion Sauk Centre Mainstreeters. The South bracket is not set yet, but look out for perennial power New London-Spicer as the top seed. Can Mike Dreier's bunch earn another trip to state? They'll have to cause a dead end for the two time section champion Mainstreeters.

Perhaps the best potential section final matchup is Section 7, with the top two seeds The unbeaten Braham Bombers and the Esko Eskomos. The Bombers feature the state's all-time leading scorer Rebekah Dahlman and Esko has the state's tallest player in 6-9 Savanna Trapp. If this comes to fruition, head p I-35 to Minnesota-Duluth. It's a game you won't want to miss.

Wrapping up Class AA is section 8, with the top two seeds the Crookston Pirates and the Hawley Nuggets. Can the Nuggets strike gold again and return to state?

Class A is next.
