The final girls basketball class to be examined in Class A. Here's how the eight section are taking shape.
In Section 1, Rushford-Peterson and Spring Grove are the top two seeds in the East subsection. The Bethlehem Academy Cardinals, led by former Carleton coach Tammy Filzen and Goodhue are the West subsection's top seeds. Can the Cards take a page from the successful boys team led by Franz Boelter and bolt up I-35 to Minneapolis? It should be interesting.
Over in section 2, the top two seeds are Minnesota Valley Lutheran and Mankato Loyola. Lookout for Lester Prairie/Holy Trinity.
Take a look at Section 3. There are several teams that have a good shot at a state tournament berth. For starters, the top two seeds are the Minneota Vikings and the Wabasso Rabbits. There's also the Dawson-Boyd Blackjacks and the Southwest Minnesota Christian Eagles. Pretty good basketball in Southwest Minnesota but only one will emerge. Who will it be?
The top seed in Section 4 is the two time defending Class A champion Maranatha Chrstian Academy Mustangs. They have only one senior, Onye Ossemenam but they have plenty of tournament experience that could earn them another trip to state.
Things are looking up in Section 5 for the top seeded Upsala Cardinals. They got off to a hot start and two of their three losses were to Maranatha. Can they survive Pine River-Backus and Verndale for their first trip to state?
Section 6 has a couple of contenders for the title, the two top seeds the Parkers PrairiePanthers and the Ada-Borup Panthers. The panthers, led by Madison Dorn and Micaela Noga have only one loss this season, to Isle. They could be the team to beat.
In Section 7, the Mountain Iron-Buhl Rangers and the Carlton Bulldogs are the top seeds. MI-B lost to Maranatha in last year's Class A final but beat them by eight points this season on January 19. They have young talent with tournament experience.
The final section to be examined is Section 8. Clearbrook-Gonvick and Win-E-Mac are the top seeds. Win-E-mac's only losses this season were to Ada-Borup. Get those buses ready in Winger, Macintosh and Erskine. Those towns will be in full force cheering on the Patriots as they attempt to make the lengthy drive to Minneapolis.
There you have it. The section previews in each of the four classes. A lot of exciting girls basketball coming up.
