Clare talks ‘Infernal Devices’ series finale in exclusive interview

We are just a day away from the release of “Clockwork Princess,” the final installment in Cassandra Clare’s internationally popular Infernal Devices series. Clare delights fans with her intricate world of the Shadowhunters. The Mortal Instruments, her first series takes place in the modern world of New York City. Its first book, “City of Bones” is being adapted into a film set to premiere August 23. The Infernal Devices is set in the same universe but takes place in Victorian London. Her next series, The Dark Artifices takes place in present day Los Angeles.

Clare is also writing a middle grade series with Holly Black called Magisterium, of which they are also writing the screenplay for. There is no doubt that Cassandra Clare is one of the busiest authors today. With that being said, I’m thrilled to be able to bring you this exclusive interview.

How does it feel to end this series?

It's both wonderful and very sad. Wonderful because I feel that the characters have been sent off with a fitting ending, and because to finish an enormous project, that required huge amounts of research, feels like an accomplishment. Sad because I'll miss these characters a great deal.

You seem to love the Victorian aspect of this series, do you think you’ll do any more historical with or without the ‘Shadowhunter Chronicles?’

Well, I tend to be obsessed by/with family connections. So I have a lot of interest in doing a series about the generation that comes after Will and Tessa and Jem. You'll see their names in the family tree. I'm interested in telling the story of those characters, and that would be set around the turn of the 19th century, as the Victorian era turned into the Edwardian era. If you've seen Downton Abbey you have some sense.

Will fans see anything from ‘Clockwork Princess’ that will carry through to ‘Lady Midnight,’ book one of ‘The Dark Artifices?’

Oh, yes, definitely. Look for a scene with a sword toward the end.

Who has been your favorite character to write in ‘The Infernal Devices?’

I can never pick favorite characters. It's like picking favorite children. I can say I've loved writing the relationship between Will and Jem. It's a perfect selfless love, the sort of thing we all aspire to but that's so hard to achieve.

Do you have a favorite ‘Infernal Devices’ moment?

I had a lot of fun with Benedict's evil party in Clockwork Prince.

If ‘Clockwork Angel,’ book one in ‘The Infernal Devices’ makes it to the big screen, what do you most look forward to seeing?

The automatons! I want to see how they realize the clockwork creatures. They could be very cool visually.

Will the conclusion of ‘The Infernal Devices’ affect the conclusion of ‘The Mortal Instruments?’

They tie into each other. There is especially one mystery left at the end of Infernal that is very clearly going to be cleared up in Heavenly Fire and I hope people wind up looking forward to seeing how it is resolved.

What do you think fans will be surprised about in ‘Clockwork Princess?’

What do you think fans will be surprised about in ‘Clockwork Princess?’

The epilogue

What is it like to write Magnus throughout the years?

So much fun! It's so great to get to see Magnus in his different guises through the years. In Infernal Devices he is a little more open, a little more easily hurt, a little less brittle. And his and Will's relationship is great fun to write. I'm really looking forward to getting to write more of him in that time in the Bane Chronicles.

When could fans expect any news on a ‘Clockwork Angel’ movie?

I've no idea. I mean, I was as surprised as anyone when the TMI movie started to move forward. If anything happens with TID I expect it will be a surprise to me as well.
