Most studies of elementary American History will (at the very least) mention a pioneer woman named Clara Barton in a study of the Civil War era. Clarissa Harlowe "Clara" Barton (1821-1912) was a pioneer American teacher, patent clerk, nurse, and humanitarian who is best remembered for organizing the American Red Cross.
If your children will be studying this time period in American History and would like to learn more about Clara Barton, there is a wonderful book (written by her own hands for school children just as yours) that would be a wonderful resource to add to any lesson plan.
It is called Story of My Childhood and Barton wrote it in response to children wanting to know more about her and her story. You will not find this book in your local library; however, it can be downloaded!
I’ve included a brief preview slideshow of the book if you would like to view it. (Preview now!)
If you’d like to download Story of My Childhood, go to available downloads and you’ll find it under Homeschool Treasures of the Past (#12).
If you would like to supplement the study with other books about Clara Barton, here are some you may want to consider looking for at your local library:
- Amazing civil war nurse Clara Barton by Mary Dodson Wade
- The life and times of Clara Barton by Susan Sales Harkins
- Clara Barton : I want to help! by Cathy East Dubowski
- The Clara Barton you never knew by James Lincoln Collier
** All of the above titles can be found at the Columbine Library (7706 W. Bowles Ave) in Littleton. **
