On Tuesday, October 20, Southwestern Law School will host the program Civility and Professionalism. This is a one hour CLE program.
Many attorneys who are in CLE compliance group 1, that is attorneys whose last name starts with A-G, may be looking for ethics specialty credit. If that's you, this event could be ideal. This time of year, programs like Civility and Professionalism will be popping up, as the compliance deadline is rapidly approaching (February 1, 2010).
The Civility and Professionalism program will be presented by Southwestern Law School's Nickel Club and the American Board of Trial Advocates. The Barristers of the Los Angeles County Bar Association are also promoting the program.
Registration for the program starts at 6:00 P, with the program starting at 6:30 PM. There will be a networking reception at 7:30 PM. The cost for Southwestern Law School alumni is $20. Others are $40. To register, call (213) 738-6814.
For law students readers, a very short primer on ethics CLE credit.
Every three years, members of the California State Bar must comply with state bar continuing legal education (CLE) requirements. Here, each state bar member within the respective compliance group, there are three compliance groups (hence, every three years it's your turn), must confirm that she/he has completed 25 hours of CLE credit. There are two types of CLE credit. Participatory credit and self-study credit. No more than half of those 25 hours can be self-study. That means, that attorneys need at least 12.5 hours of participatory credit. Participatory credit requires a third party certification. This is where live and other interactive program types come in. On top of this, certain "specialty credits" are also required. Generally, specialty credits are in the areas of ethics and substance abuse. It always takes a little more effort to get these specialty credits because there aren't many attorneys whose practice specilaty relies on ethics and substance abuse. For instance, if your practice is focused on environmental law, you can study and attend 25 hours or more of programs that are about environmental law, but you still have to complete the specialty credits every three years.
