This Saturday Denver’s Civic Center Park will come alive with the sound of music. In the past year the park has hosted numerous important cultural events, including a historic address by soon-to-be President Barack Obama. "Its location at the crossroads of government, culture, commercial and community, combined with its spectacular urban backdrop, make it a highly desirable location for public gatherings," says Lindy Eichenbaum Lent, Executive Director for the Civic Center Conservancy.
Yet the park is still a target of an (often unfair) perception of urban blight. As part of an ongoing effort to "activate" the area and raise awareness of this Denver treasure the Conservancy is hosting "Civic Center Sounds" a free concert at the park’s Greek Amphitheater on 14th Avenue (map.) The event is open to the public and will be picnic friendly, perfect for the sunny weather forecasted for this weekend’s weather. Food concessions are also available on-site.
Headline entertainment will feature music by the Lt. Dan Band, a pop music group led by actor Gary Sinise. Sinise is best known for his starring roles in movies and television, including the current CBS hit series, CSI:NY. The band – which has toured extensively with the USO entertaining American troops abroad – is an outgrowth of Sinise’s role opposite Tom Hanks in Forrest Gump and is named for the character he portrayed in that film. The concert will also feature opening entertainment by local favorite Opie Gone Bad.
Civic Center Sounds will begin at 5 pm on Saturday, Aurgust 8th. For more info visit : www.CivicCenterConservancy.org
