The first of nine Bay Area locations for City Sports Club had its grand opening on Saturday, October 27, 2012, giving media and the community a chance to view the new facility.
The location at 1045 Brokaw Rd. in San Jose, a model for all the clubs, shows that Bay Area residents can expect all-around fitness facilities and an array of pricing options that is tailored to meet an individual's goals.
All-around fitness
The 45,000 square foot club shows off the easy-access, mass market fitness that appears to be the membership sweet spot for the club: ample parking, a mix of classes, free weights, lap pool, sauna, whirlpool spa, basketball court and equipment.
There is plenty of functional, state-of-the-art cardio equipment, plus free weights and resistance machines. There was no TRX in sight. When I asked a staff member about classes, she referred me to the website, which focuses on a standard lineup such as cycling, kickboxing, yoga/pilates and Zumba. At least for now, it appears they aren't chasing every niche and fad, but offering what most people want most often.
For an extra charge, the club offers racquetball, leagues, personal training and onsite kids care.
Joe Quinn, regional vice president for sales and marketing, says consistency, cleanliness, and well-maintained facilities are hallmarks of the chain. All instructors are nationally certified and auditioned.
So far as their place in the market, he said, "When you compare our clubs to other sports clubs you are going to find we provide a great value."
Customizable pricing
City Sports has a unique pricing that allows people to adjust their monthly payment based on how much of a one-time enrollment fee they pay. Rates for enrollment fees range from $0 - $225 and monthly fees generally range from $30 - $49 per person. No contract is required, additional family members cost extra, and as noted above, some of the activities cost extra.

The City Sports Club at 610 Newhall Dr. in San Jose (by the airport, off Coleman) will be opening in December. The club in Fremont is underway. The other clubs are in various states of planning. According to Quinn, the lineup of openings is mostly about market and real estate conditions.
City Sports Club is a chain within the Fitness International LLC group, which also owns LA Fitness and Lifestyle Family Fitness in Florida.
All in all, City Sports Club is a welcome addition to the market. Neither high-end nor bare-bones, the clubs offer an attractive price alternative and all the amenities necessary to get and stay fit.
