One of Cleveland’s most noted treasures is University Circle.  It is the home of Case Western Reserve University, the Cleveland Instiute of Music and the Cleveland Institute of Art.  All three of these schools are at the top of their respective fields in terms of education.  Surrounding them in this amazing area are a wide variety of cultural institutions, restaurants, galleries and parks.

Some of the highlights include:

Cleveland Orchestra – The Cleveland Orchestra is one of the top Orchestra’s in the country today.  Music Director, Franz Welser-Möst is currently in his eighth year leading the orchestra.  Check the schedule and see if you can get tickets to one of the concerts when you visit.

Cleveland Museum of Art – The museum is completing a huge multiyear $258 million expansion renovation which is transforming this already spectacular institution into something even more incredible.  While large parts of the museum are currently available, the entire renovation is expected to be complete in 2011.  The Cleveland Museum is known for their eastern art collection.  It also has an amazing comprehensive collection boasting 42,000 works of art.  It hosts shows regularly, so check the calendar to see if any special events interest you.

The Cleveland Botanical Gardens – The Gardens are also another of the relatively newly renovated cultural centers in University Circle.  This 10 acre visitor center offers one of the finest gardens in the Midwest.  Feel free to visit anytime in the year as there is always something different to see.  The garden is also home to the Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse, a unique conservatory that takes you on an exotic adventure to the lush rainforest of Costa Rica and the spiny desert of Madagascar.

I love the botanical gardens. They are very special. But you are right the entire circle is great.

Next time driving across to check out northeastern Ohio's wine country I'll plan a University Circle stop
