The city of Long Beach, which is still rebuilding itself from the devastation caused several months ago by Hurricane Sandy, now welcomes a new City Council member.
On Sunday, it was announced that Democrat Eileen Goggin, an attorney member of the Long Beach zoning board, would be filling an empty seat on the five-member council.
Goggin will be filling seat on the city council that was left empty when former Councilman Michael Fagen was convicted of receiving unemployment benefits while he was serving on the board.
Fagen, a Democrat first elected to city council in 2009, was convicted on Feb. 5 of petit larceny, and his seat therefore vacated. He will be sentenced on April 8, when he may face up to 4 years in prison.
Goggin will finish out Fagen's term, which is set to end in November.
Perhaps the most important thing for the council to focus on during the remainder of this year is to continue to rebuild the city of Long Beach. Many residents of the city have remained displaced from their homes, and many are also still waiting to repair their homes due to the devastation that the storm brought to the city in November.
