On busy Centre Street in Jamaica Plain lies the bright and colorful City Feed & Supply. The large mural on the side of the store proclaims “Buy Fresh, Buy Local,” which pretty much sums up what you will find inside. Both a café and small grocery store, City Feed & Supply prides itself on providing an excellent selection of local and organic foods.
A popular breakfast and lunch spot, those coming to check out the café’s various options will not be disappointed. Besides fair trade coffee and local baked goods (provided by either Carberry’s or Iggy's) there is an extensive sandwich selection. Pandering to both vegetarians and carnivores alike, you can get your breakfast sandwich with either meatless sausage or the real thing. If you have the kids in tow, a Peanut Butter and Jelly is available. No expense is spared, the jam is local and the peanut butter is freshly ground.
For lunch, an extensive menu contains a variety of gourmet cold cuts as well as tofurky and tofu. This variety emphasizes the genius behind City Feed: Healthy, fresh food with something for everyone. Throughout your experience you are convinced that they really do care, not something you find everywhere these days. Next to the sugar and cream for your coffee, both organic local honey and soy milk are provided. In the days of Starbucks, it is nice to see a place that provides these extras at no extra cost.
When you have finished eating, feel free to peruse the grocery. Fruit and vegetables from local farms is one of the best features, some items being cheaper than in a large supermarket. Other great things to look for are local and raw honey from Boston Honey, Fat Toad Farm caramel sauces from Vermont, and Butterworks Farm Yogurt. These items will run a little high in price, but are worth it for the trade up in quality. The only thing to pass on is the mainstream groceries. Definitely save the basic purchases for a traditional supermarket if you are looking to save a little cash.
