City Council to pay tribute to 1st African-American Mayor West of Mississippi

Milpitas, CA (February 20) -- "This is one community which cares about its people...".

This was the statement issued by Former Milpitas Mayor Ben Gross in 1971 about the city of Milpitas.

February is African-American Month. So, as a tribute to the first African-American Milpitas Mayor, the City Council of Milpitas and Crowne Plaza are jointly sponsoring a tribute celebration in honor of Former Mayor Ben Gross.

"Celebrate our community's history and pay tribute to Milpitas Mayor, Ben Gross, whose time in Milpitas changed the face of both Milpitas and the nation! Mr. Gross was first African-American Mayor West of Mississippi, was instrumental in the founding of Sunnyhills Neighborhood and was a respected leader in the United Autoworkers Union," the co-sponsors said in a statement issued to the public.

The tribute celebration will be held on Saturday, February 23, 2013 at 12 noon at Barbara Lee Senior Center, 40 N. Milpitas Boulevard.
