Yep, that's right, citrus fruit as in grapefruits, lemons and oranges. More people are connecting the dots of eating natural, healthy, clean ‘real’ food with enjoying natural, general and specific health and wellness. Last month FoodMatters.tv posted a #FMtip on Twitter and Facebook, "Round citrus fruits contain a substance known to inhibit the development of cancer in the breasts." (The first picture in this article's slideshow of the grapefruit was included in the post.) The ‘substance’ is limonene, as previously reported in the first article recommended below; researched and documented to be an anti-tumor and anti-cancer natural chemical constituent.
However, be aware that the quality of the citrus fruit is important; choosing mass produced, toxin-laden citrus fruit does not qualify. The Environmental Working Group has a list of 48 popular fruits and vegetables with pesticide levels (low ranking means high pesticides). They published a helpful, short list, take along guide, EWG's 2013 Shopper's Guide to Pesticides in Produce™ as a PDF or as an app to help in choosing produce - whether organic is best or conventional may be acceptable. Fortunately, grapefruit is among the Clean Fifteen, meaning purchasing organic grapefruit generally is not necessary.
The author prefers to drink purified water with drops of therapeutic grapefruit, lemon or orange essential oil as a lifestyle choice. The essential oil is expressed from the rind, aka the skin, the primarily location of limonene, the substance referred to in the post. It’s easier and more practical to consume as an essential oil. (Grapefruit, lemon and orange and some other citrus essential oils have been designated as Generally Regarded As Safe (GRAS) to consume by the FDA.) To insure the essential oil’s quality, it is very important to be confident that the skin/ rind is clean, devoid of any chemicals - know the resource, its seed, farming, harvesting, expression and packaging policies and procedures for the essential oil.
The second article introduces the concept and lifestyle of those that embrace various Complementary and Alternative Medicine (CAM) modalities, the author's preferred being therapeutic essential oils from Young Living Essential Oils. The last article recommends several food movie resources, one of them is Food Matters.
