“I hereby declare, on oath, that I absolutely and entirely renounce and abjure all allegiance and fidelity to any foreign prince, potentate, state, or sovereignty of whom or which I have heretofore been a subject or citizen; that I will support and defend the Constitution and laws of the United States of America against all enemies, foreign and domestic; that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same…” A crowd of people recites these words after the judge. Once they complete the recitation, the judge will pronounce them new citizens of the United States of America and have them give themselves a round of applause. They have just completed a lengthy and difficult process, consisting of filing paperwork, the interview, and the test, which measures their knowledge of English and civics.
Who is the vice president of the United States? Why does the US flag have 13 stripes? What war was fought between the North and the South? How many branches of government are there? These questions, found on the United States citizenship test, are fairly easy to answer for those of us who were born in this country or came here as young children and learned English and civics at school. For older immigrants, however, this task is far more challenging. One way to tackle these questions with confidence is to enroll in a citizenship class.
Citizenship classes are offered in a variety of locations, including community organizations , online , and through the Minneapolis Community Education (MCE) program . Students attending MCE classes learn US history and government, and prepare for the citizenship exam and interview, both mandatory steps before they can take the oath of allegiance. The requirements to take this class include being a US permanent resident, or green card holder, for 4 years or more, and being in ESL level 3 or higher . With these classes, immigrants can prepare themselves for the complex process and satisfy all the requirements for becoming US citizens. Best wishes.
