Tuesday is the 2010 National Night Out which is a safety and community event that cities around the country participate in. The 27th Annual National Night Out is Tuesday, August 3, 2010 (except for cities in the state of Texas who will participate October 5 this year). The 2010 National Night Out is a unique safety and community event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch (NATW).
The program is a neighborhood watch program on a national level, and it gets neighbors together to ensure safety in their neighborhood. Local neighborhood watch programs also participate in the national program. The hours are generally set for 7-10 pm and have been organized by neighborhood, but some cities have chosen to begin earlier in the day.
According to the 2010 NATIONAL NIGHT OUT website the program is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs;
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
