Grammy award-winning soul and gospel legend Cissy Houston breaks her silence with a new book about her late superstar daughter Whitney Houston, nearly a year after the pop icon's death.
Remembering Whitney: My Story of Love, Loss, and the Night the Music Stopped (Harper) is "honest and heartbreaking, a mother's story of tears, joy, and her greatest love of all—her daughter, Whitney," as described by its publisher.
Cissy Houston, 79, writes candidly about Whitney's humble beginnings in the church choir, her meteoric rise to pop superstardom, and the singer's tumultuous marriage to R&B bad boy Bobby Brown. She also discusses the first time she learned about Whitney's drug use, the pop diva's chronic drug abuse and futile attempts to quit, as well as the last time she would see Whitney alive and the day she learned of her death.
In a television interview with Oprah that aired Monday on OWN, Houston discussed her strained relationship with Whitney's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, admitting concerns that her granddaughter may be starting down the same deadly path as her mother.
Asked how she arrived at the decision to write the book, Houston said, "At times it got very difficult, but either you're going to do it or you're not."
