Circuit of The Americas today announced the addition of the Pro Mazda Championship Presented by Cooper Tires to the lineup for the GRAND-AM of The Americas presented by GAINSCO and TOTAL set for March 1-2, 2013. This open-wheel series makes its debut in 2013, replacing the Star Mazda Championship.
The Pro Mazda Championship will serve as a support series to the GRAND-AM Rolex Sports Car Series at the Circuit and will kick off the Pro Mazda Championship 2013 season. The series is sanctioned by INDYCAR and is the second official step on the Mazda Road to Indy ladder system. Mazda Road to Indy awards a scholarship package from Mazda to the series’ champion to advance to Firestone Indy Lights competition the following year.
“We are excited to add the Pro Mazda Championship to the GRAND-AM of The Americas weekend,” Circuit Executive Vice President Bruce Knox said. “This competitive, open-wheel racing series will provide fans with a great complement to GRAND-AM’s incomparable sports car racing. As a part of Mazda’s Road to Indy, the series has produced many well-known names including current IndyCar drivers Marco Andretti and Graham Rahal, as well as Conor Daly and NASCAR driver Michael McDowell.”
Fans attending the race at Circuit of The Americas this March will also be able to see current drivers Matt Brabham (grandson of three-time Formula One Champion Sir Jack Brabham) and Shelby Blackstock (son of country music star Reba McIntyre). Series drivers will have an opportunity to test their vehicles on the Circuit’s 3.4-mile Grade 1 track prior to the inaugural race with private test dates currently set for February 23-24.
“Opening our 2013 season at the Circuit of The Americas is terrific for our teams and sponsors,” said series promoter Dan Andersen, who owns and operates Andersen Promotions. “It is a first-class facility and a great venue to debut our new series. Personally, I can’t wait to see our Pro Mazda cars competing on this fantastic circuit. We are all looking forward to an exciting event in support of GRAND-AM.”
Tickets to the GRAND-AM of The Americas presented by GAINSCO and TOTAL and its support series are available now. Three-day general admission tickets are $59 and premium reserved seats are $69. Premium reserved seats will include paddock access for fans during the race. Patrons with Circuit of The Americas personal seat licenses will have the option to purchase discounted premium reserved seats.
