Mort Shuman and Eric Blau created the musical Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris as a structure for the composer’s works.
Cinnabar’s production uses a five-piece instrumental ensemble and four vocalists to celebrate the iconic balladeer.
Is love only a mirage? This is one of Brel’s repeating questions. Brel certainly opined that it is fleeting and precarious. Likewise, his approach to our short yet bewitching lives is existential.
The macabre plot takes a backseat to his songs, which seem to declare: that we are on this ride called life for a short while, but we can make it magnificent and incandescent.
Stage direction by Elly Lichenstein. Music direction by Al Haas and Robert Lunceford. Choreography by Joseph Favalora. Brel has been extended through January 26.
Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and Living in Paris plays at the Cinnabar Theater, 3333 Petaluma Blvd. N., Petaluma. Tickets are $25-$35, and are available at (707) 763-8920, or online at www.cinnabartheater.org.
