Cinco de Mayo has become a broad celebration of the Mexican heritage and culture in the United States. Many school districts educate the students about the historical significance of the day. How is your children celebrating and learning about the holiday in school?

The 5th of May commemorates the victory of the Mexican militia over the French army at the Battle of Puebla in1862. The battle was significant in that about 4,500 Mexican soldiers, greatly outnumbered by the French army, were able to defeat the well-equipped army, according to MEXonline.com.

This holiday is a symbol of Mexican pride and unity, and includes great festivities. The Battle of Puebla showed the Mexican population that their people are willing to defend their country and this gave the country a feeling of unity and strength.

Ask your children what they learned about in Cinco de Mayo. Help enhance your child’s appreciation of the Mexican culture by making creative crafts or eating a Mexican dinner.
