Cincinnati Zoo to recieve baby gorilla from Gladys Porter Zoo in Texas

The female infant gorilla was born January 29, 2013, to Kiaza - on loan to the Gladys Porter Zoo from the Cincinnati Zoo in Ohio. The silverback male, Moja, fathered the baby which is being hand-reared due to Kiaza not displaying the necessary maternal actions.

The unnamed female baby gorilla belongs to the Cincinnati Zoo due to Kiaza being on breeding loan to the Gladys Porter Zoo through the SSP, Species Survival Plan, and it has been decided to introduce her into the Cincinnati troop. The Cincinnati Zoo has two female gorillas having proven mothering skills and are potential surrogates for the new baby gorilla. The move is planned for this week.

The western lowland gorilla is native to central Africa and listed as a species at risk through the IUCN, International Union for Conservation of Nature.
