Cincinnati Rollergirls return March 23 to the Cincinnati Gardens

It's back! Roller derby returns to the Cincinnati Gardens on Saturday, March 23, when the Cincinnati Rollergirls open their eighth season with a double-header against NEO (Northeast Ohio) Roller Derby of Akron, OH.

The 2013 season includes the return of all the things fans love about Cincinnati Rollergirls games - including the same low ticket prices, free parking, tailgating and a $1 beer happy hour - plus some new features that will make the game day experience even more exciting:

* RULE CHANGES: The Women's Flat Track Derby Association recently updated the rules of the sport to get the action started more quickly and keep it moving. Minor penalties have been eliminated, and jams now begin on a single whistle rather than separate whistles for blockers and jammers. (A 60-minute roller derby game is made up a series of "jams" up to two minutes in length in which jammers score points by passing members of the opposing team.)

* RETURNING FAVORITES: This season marks the return of fan favorite Sadistic Sadie after a two-year absence. Other veteran skaters returning to the flat track include Buckhead Betty, Hannah Barbaric, K. Lethal, Nuk'em, Pistol Whippin' Wendy and Wheezy.

* ROOKIES TO WATCH: The Cincinnati Rollergirls welcomed eight rookies to the team after tryouts in January and February, and fans will be seeing a lot more of skaters who joined the team last year. Keep your eye on up-and-coming skaters such as Big Ugly, Cincy Psych-O, I Caramba, La Bruja and Ruthless Chris.
