USA Baseball has announced today that it has presented its provisional roster for the 2013 World Baseball Classic. Local Cincinnati Reds player Brandon Phillips is the only Cincinnati Reds player on the roster. Phillips has said that he is honored to join the team.
Phillips will join reigning Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey and several other current major league baseball players.
Team USA will be led by former Yankees skipper Joe Torre.
Also, retired former major league players Greg Maddux, Dale Murphy, Gerald Perry, Willie Randolph, Marcel Lachemann and Larry Bowa will join Torre’s coaching staff.
Teams start playing in March. Team USA will play in the same group as Canada, Mexico and Italy.
The World Baseball Classic is a baseball tournament sanctioned by the International Baseball Federation—a competition featuring the best baseball nations in the world.
The tournament gives players an opportunity to showcase their skills nationally while representing their country in competition against other countries.
