It was an abrupt end to Churchill's Fine Cigars' presence in downtown Phoenix, as the store was shuttered and emptied out over the weekend, leaving some customers surprised when they came by on Monday.
The move was announced to customers via e-mail and social media on Monday morning, though a specific reason for the closure wasn't specified. Churchill's general manager Todd McNett said that the situation "just wasn't working out," but declined to go into further detail.
The closure leaves Churchill's with five stores around the Valley: 44th St. and Camelback in Central Phoenix, Scottsdale, Ahwatukee, Glendale and Tempe. The downtown store came into existence at the end of 2009 and became a favorite lunchtime and post-work hangout for those that work in the area. It developed a loyal following among business professionals and had recently launched a "Downtown Cigar Club" that met once per month to enjoy cigars and networking among those in the area.
Churchill's also had a store in Cave Creek that lasted less than a year, as they took over the space that had previously been Mojito Cigar Lounge before selling that operation back to the store's original owner.
