Earlier this week, Churchill's Fine Cigars shuttered in Scottsdale location, which was located near the southwest corner of Scottsdale & Shea in a densely packed area for cigar stores.
The move leaves four locations for Churchill's--the flagship store on 44th St. & Camelback, Glendale, Tempe and Ahwatukee.
In a tweet and email to customers, the company said nothing more about the closure other than that it was unable to come to terms on a lease agreement with the property's management. Bart Gerber, the owner of Churchill's Fine Cigars, declined to go into further detail about the store's closure, other than to say it will allow him to focus on the other four stores, which he said are all doing well, as well as some other things he has in the works.
There had been rumor amongst the Phoenix cigar community that a group of customers was planning to either take over the lease or purchase the store outright from Churchill's, but those plans were apparently put to rest as they were unable to agree to terms with the landlord as well. As a result, Churchill's removed all the inventory and fixtures from the store and has been redistributing it to its other four locations.
It's been a fairly busy 18 months or so for Churchill's in terms of store openings and closings; as in February 2013, the Cave Creek location returned to being known as Mojito Cigar Lounge after it was sold back to Bill Niederer, who subsequently closed it and opened a new store called Smoke & Joe a few miles south. Churchill's then shuttered its downtown Phoenix location in October 2013. At its peak, Churchill's had seven Valley locations, but with the Scottsdale closure is now sits at four.
